Le MansTheory Dispelled - von Bill Begg
Hi Skaters,
For years I have had to listen to people say you can't do double up marathons & you can't race every weekend, well Botero & Max seemed to have this year & were 1st & 2nd in the Zug event.
But the one that really gets me is the doomsday people that say, you can't do the Le Mans 24 hour relay race, as it takes you two months to recover.
Well here is a bit of a funny story to counter that one!
Marc Christen & Wayne Begg, both raced the Valle de Joux race, Marc Crashed & was injured, Wayne ploughed into a big spectator & knocked him over.
Now they travelled by train & car to Le Mans in the middle of the night & had to put in some big hard efforts for team Bont in the event, then Wayne had a 15 hour car trip back to Switzerland & 3 hours rest, before going to Germany for 4 days, not exactly the best recovery programme.
Come Zugersee marathon, 15 days after Le Mans, wet weather, some tough hills & all the top skaters, Marc Christen breaks away, with a kilomwter to go & gets caught 20 meters from the finish & ends up 13th.
Wayne Begg arrives at the back of the bunch of 23 skaters & comes through for 4th place, Max Presti, Jorge Botero, Pascal Briand, Wayne Begg, Alexis Contin, with all the top guys present except Luca Presti & Francesco Zangarini, it was Waynes best result in a big WIC race.
So please don't anyone try & tell me what you can't do, as some first hand experience from last year & this year tells me different.
